Van Dijk Concedes Squad Faces Crisis, Challenges Teammates on Accountability

The Liverpool skipper has issued a scathing assessment of Liverpool's disappointing title defence, confessing the title holders are in disarray and failing head coach Slot while doubting whether every player is owning up for the current downturn.

Van Dijk’s Demands: Take Responsibility

Van Dijk usually speaks the press after a game as part of his role as team leader. This time was distinct, however. He spoke was more forceful – so loud that any player in the Anfield tunnel could hear him – and he shook with anger while challenging the squad to react. “Anger is justified,” he insisted. “The main thing for me is that everyone has to take responsibility.” Asked whether that is happening, Van Dijk replied: “I don’t know. But it's essential. It’s the main thing I expect the players to do. It's challenging during tough periods but we have to do it if we want to get out of this.”

Squad Investment and Broader Issues

The Merseyside club invested almost £450 million to replenish a title-winning squad in the off-season but have gone backwards, with several high-profile signings failing to make an impact so far. The captain maintained that Liverpool’s problems extend past the new recruits. “It's difficult for all involved,” he said. “My expectation is for everyone to take responsibility on the pitch. This is necessary in order to push each other, to improve collectively. When someone is pressing, you must join the effort. These are fundamentals but it’s not happening enough.”

Appeal to Stick Together

Van Dijk continued: “This season we don’t have any steady form, we allow far too many goals, we are losing battles and everyone is responsible for it and I hope everyone sees that. It's vital to take responsibility to turn this around and tempting to assign blame but you have to do it together. Past successes were collective and won the league and everyone was part of it, and during a challenging phase you must remain united and not point fingers.

“You have to be a man and confront the hardship and go again, repeatedly because if you want to give up then you are in the wrong environment in my eyes, because this club has been enduring numerous challenges over those years and we’ve always come out of it. However, that doesn't imply it is easy, it’s tiring but there is no other way.”

Looking Ahead

The upcoming match in the Premier League is a trip to West Ham next weekend, after the midweek visit of the Dutch side in the Champions League. He said: “The next game is another game so how should I respond, dwell on the loss? No, I’m going to go home and analyze how we can turn this around and I trust that is what everyone is doing as well.”
