Israelis have assembled across the country to commemorate 24 months since the Hamas-led offensive on October 7th, 2023, as talks continued in the neighboring country over a resolution to the war in the Gaza Strip.

The incident resulted in more than 1,200 people dead and 251 others captured away to Gaza as prisoners. It was the single most lethal day for Jews since the Holocaust.

Israel responded by launching a military offensive in Gaza which has taken more than 67,000 people, according to the territory's Hamas-administered health ministry. Its statistics are regarded as reliable by the UN and other global organizations.

"Our bloodthirsty opponents have caused great damage, but they have not overcome us," Benjamin Netanyahu stated on that day.

He also promised to "accomplish all the goals of the war: the return of all the captured, the destruction of the Hamas administration and the assurance that Gaza will never again pose a threat to Israel".

Memorial Gatherings Across Israel

The Israeli government rescheduled state commemorations until mid-October - after the completion of the religious holiday season - but gatherings still occurred throughout the country on that day.

A remembrance service for the loved ones of people who died in the Hamas attack was organized in Tel Aviv. Organized by the families themselves, it was broadcast across Israeli TV networks.

A period earlier, a minute's silence was respected across the country.

Ceasefire Meetings in Egypt

Meanwhile, Israeli and Hamas representatives gathered in the North African Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh for a continuing round of third-party negotiations to examine the provisions of the proposal.

A senior delegate familiar with the negotiations said that an night meeting of mediated discussions started at evening in Egypt.

The representative said the morning session concluded without concrete outcomes, due to conflicting views over the proposed Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas demands to ensure Israel does not restart hostilities after the first phase of the arrangement.

He added that the talks are "difficult and have yet to achieve any significant progress," but pointed out that mediators are striving to close the disparities between the conflicting groups.

Essential Issues in Negotiations

  • An enduring halt to fighting
  • The exchange of the hostages still detained by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners from Gaza
  • The removal of military personnel from Gaza
  • Measures for assistance deliveries
  • Post-war administration of the territory

Citizen Feeling

In Tel Aviv's Hostages Square that day, 29-year-old Hagar - whose family member lived through the assault on the outdoor event, where hundreds were lost their lives and dozens more were abducted by Hamas gunmen - told: "No place feels like home any longer and until every captive are released not a single person will feel safe."

"When we see everyone home once more, we can feel relief again. Then we can commence rebuild," she added.

Near Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's official dwelling in the capital, people gathered to show their backing for the families of the hostages. Israel states nearly fifty continue in confinement in Gaza, 20 of whom are thought to be living.

Activist one woman stated: "It's necessary do any agreement needed for the captives to return. But we truly desire guarantees that we will be secure."

Surveys now regularly indicate that around 70% of the population desire the conflict to end in as payment for the freedom of the hostages.

Gaza Situation

At the site of Nova festival, mourners assembled to honor the dead.

From there, the boom of Israeli air strikes and explosions could be noticed just a short distance away in Gaza, where witnesses reported the heavy Israeli shelling carried on.

In the main city, bombardments were noted in the morning of that day in the west side Tal al-Hawa, area and locality neighbourhoods and in the eastern neighbourhood of that sector, as well the camp to the northwest.

"Once the dusk arrives, the anxiety arrives with it," displaced Gaza City resident Emaan al-Wahidi, whose young son was killed by an Israeli bombing earlier, explained.

"My family are fearful of the attacks. Throughout the evening we are resting together, clinging, especially my youngest child who puts his face on me all night."

"Every second we monitor the updates to see the situation. And I'm afraid that this ceasefire will not be achieved and that the war will come back to us."

Medical Emergency

The medical facility in Gaza City announced it had taken in the corpses of half dozen people by the daytime, including several killed in an Israeli attack in the south part area.

Nasser hospital in the southern urban center of Khan Younis reported additional victims had been transported. One of them was lost his life by Israeli soldiers while looking for assistance to the south, medical staff stated.

The territory's health ministry said 25 of the {territ
