After Two Decades, A Survivor Secured Justice

While serving on a court jury in 2018, the survivor realized he must chase accountability for his experience after being violated in 2004.

“When I heard the individuals giving evidence, I could literally see myself in the same situation,” he explained following the relinquishment his right to anonymity.

Following the court case, the now 39-year-old from Norfolk’s Watton opted to notify local authorities again to detail his perpetrator.

On 27 February 2024, twenty long years following the assault, the offender from the area of Oulton Broad was sentenced to eight years in jail after being convicted of dual offenses of rape and a single charge of sexual penetration.

The survivor had been 17 years old when he met then 21-year-old the perpetrator in Norwich in 2004, and their interaction became his earliest partnership.

During a weekend evening in May that year, the duo had gone to a outdoor grill when the assailant became intoxicated and instructed Dan to take him back.

Around midnight, the perpetrator told Dan to pull over on a quiet road near the medical facility in the Norfolk area.

Gilder attacked Dan and left him with significant internal harm which led to him being taken to the hospital three times that summer.

Traumatized, Dan was managed to transport the assailant back before going back to his family residence.

“I remained in bed for an extended period wondering, ‘what took place? what transpired?’,” he explained.

In September that year, Dan approached the police and reported the assault.

The survivor stated he had submitted a report at the time, but it stalled any further because he was “extremely unwell at that juncture”.

His grandparents and additional relatives were unaware he was homosexual, he mentioned.

“Society was distinct in those days,” he reflected.

Dan is now a managerial professional for the public administration, but he was once engaged in a prison, where he said he would frequently fight back emotions when inmates discussed their own mistreatment.

The survivor also mentioned he was attacked on the job, which also resulted in traumatic recollections.

“Subsequently, during jury duty. Flashbacks back to the assault anew. It was a non-stop cycle that required cessation,” he expressed.

The female witnesses who helped obtain a guilty verdict in the 2018 court case in which he was a panel member were “inspirational”, according to Dan.

“It was just remarkable to see them stepping forward and providing testimony and handling the challenging inquiries being posed to them,” he commented.

“I held a position at Stansted as an immigration officer at that time, and I had to take a three-week absence sick.

“It was then that I again disclosed [the attack] to the law enforcement and I petitioned to proceed with it for me, which they agreed to,” he added.

Two detectives from the authorities were allocated to Dan’s case in the year 2018, and it advanced to a charge and trial at the judicial venue in November 2023.

In his victim impact statement, Dan described how he had been identified with complex post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) linked to the assault.

“I have had, and continue to have, frequent ideas of suicide,” he expressed.

One in four of women and nearly six percent of men have been the victims of sexual violence, or attempted sexual assault, according to the official statistics.

An investigation found that 44% of 180 people who were exposed to disturbing content in trials reported symptoms consistent with PTSD.

“Historic incidents, mental health difficulties and acute anxiety during a hearing can exacerbate psychological responses,” experts highlighted.

Back in 2004, Dan’s mother approached the perpetrator when he visited her son in the hospital after Dan had informed her what had happened.

“An anger surged similar to flames inside me. I was deeply enraged,” she recalled.

The individual exited and it was the last time she laid eyes on him.

While talking to her son, she said: “I experienced great pride of you for persisting with what you believed in and taking it all the way through. It was rightful vindication. You’d strived intensely.

“Emotionally, the experience deeply affected on you and we could see how you faced challenges.”

Dan said his current work as an emergency responder for firefighting services had helped him with the recovery journey.

“Doing this for the community has provided me with something to concentrate on and live for,” he expressed.

Dan said he now took pleasure in his pets, biking and exploring new places.

Since May he has started to make recordings about his journey and posts them on social media, where he now has 12,000 followers on the video app.
